Recommended image sizes

Hi there, for the various widgets that support background images, are there recommended sizes to use? Also, between the different layouts (monitor, tablet, phone) Is there any guidance on how to predict which parts of the images I use will get cropped in and out? Or is there a way to specify different versions of the images to use for different layouts?

I'm finding that on a full screen layout, things look fine, but on a mobile device, images are getting cropped to odd sections - for instance, in a hero image on my mobile device, all that shows up is a picture of my elbow - not the most compelling content for an "About" page ;-)
